Sion Barry, Western Mail, 1 Dec 2004

A NEW business in Caerphilly is hoping to revolutionise the way chemical testing is carried out in the workplace. Riochem, based at Caerphilly Business Park, is the brainchild of chartered chemist Dr Sohail Hajatdoost. Dr Hajatdoost has created a mini laboratory, called TinyLab, that can be used by all types of business for a range of chemical analysis. The instrument was recently exhibited in the British Invention Show held in Alexandra Palace, London and became winner of the platinum award for best industrial invention of the year.

Uses can range from chemical testing in large industrial companies to checking the chlorine levels of water in local swimming pools. The hand-held chemical laboratory enables titration tests on fluids in a variety of business and education applications. This development has the potential to tap into local, European and global markets and Dr Hatjatdoost has big plans for the future. He said, "I am very excited about launching this innovative new product."Hopefully TinyLab will make a big impact in the chemical testing market and I'm confident business of all sizes will be able to benefit from this new development."Caerphilly County Borough council has been helping the venture get off the ground by providing a business planning grant. The company has also received an Assembly Investment Grant.Antony Bolter of Caerphilly County Borough Council said, "This is exactly the sort of hi-tech innovative business we are keen to support and we wish Sohail the best of luck for the future."
