Mini laboratory set to be big news
Antony Bolter - South Wales Argos 30 Nov 2004

CHEMICAL analysis using portable equipment is the unique selling point of a new business. Riochem, based at Caer-philly Business Park, is the brainchild of chartered chemist Dr Sohail Hajat-doost. He has created a mini-laboratory called TinyLab which can be used by all types of business for a range of chemical analysis. The instrument was recen-tly exhibited at the British Invention Show held in Alexandra Palace, London. It won the platinum award for best industrial invention of the year.

Uses can range from chemical testing in large industrial environments to checking the chlorine levels of water in swimming pools. The hand-held TinyLab enables titration tests on fluids (measuring the reaction when one solution is added to another). Its inventor believes it has the potential to tap into local, European and global markets. He said: "I am very excited about launching this new product and I would like to express my thanks to the council and the Assembly for all the support I've been given over recent months. "Hopefully TinyLab will make a big impact in the chemical testing market and I'm confident business of all sizes will be able to benefit from it."

Caerphilly council has helped the venture get off the ground by providing a business planning grant. The Assembly has provided support in the shape of an Assembly investment grant. Antony Bolter of Caerphilly council said: "This is exactly the sort of hi-tech, innovative business we are keen to support and we wish Sohail the best of luck. "The council offers a range of grants for businesses of all shapes and sizes and we are always happy to help."
